Unprecedented Steel Price Increases
The following quote by the CEO
of Dana Holdings
Corp appeared in a recent Automotive News article:
“The company started the year paying $307 per
ton
for steel for driveline components and they set
their budget for $410 per ton, but $525
flew by us
in May and it is slowly resting today at $850.”
That is nearly triple the
original cost! These soaring
costs have left manufacturers purchasing raw materials in the
US steel industry facing very
difficult purchasing and pricing decisions. This leaves those of us who purchase the manufactured product having to face increased prices and steel surcharges due to increases between time of quote/order and time of delivery. The steel market has become so unstable that our manufacturers - and in turn distributors like us - unable to simply absorb the increases waiting on the market to level out in the near future. Realistically, there is no leveling off in the near future. As with fuel prices, steel and raw materials look as if they will continue in this volatile way for an unknown period of time. Please bear with us! We will be fair and up front with you regarding these increases and surcharges and will keep you updated as we learn more going forward.
